ADB to initiate IT, Agricultural projects in Bangladesh

A-five member Asian Development Bank (ADB) delegation led by Mr. Sungsup Ra, Director, Human and Social Development Division, ADB today (23/01/2018) called on Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh at UGC Auditorium. At meeting, ADB expressed interest to initiate two projects in country’s tertiary education. The projects were Human Resource Development for IT Engineers and another one for setting up Advanced Institutions in Science and Technology.

The delegation showed the interest at a meeting with UGC Chairman. The other members of the delegation are Mr. Eisuke Tajima, Senior Social Sector Specialist, Human and Social Development Division, South Asia Department, Mr. Seong-Ryong Lee, Social Sector Specialist, Human and Social Development Division, South Asia Department, Dr. Zhigang Li, Social Sector Economist, Bangladesh Resident Mission and Mr. SM Ebadur Rahman, Senior Social Sector Officer, ADB.

Professor Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain, Members, UGC and senior officials of UGC, among others, were present.

During the meeting, Mr. Sungsup Ra said ADB is interested to initiate the IT project in 2019 and another one in agriculture in 2020 in Bangladesh’s universities for human capital development. He also said ADB will develop curriculum in these fields too. Collaborations and connectivity among ADB, UGC and universities are highly needed to expedite the proposed projects. 

UGC Chairman, in his speech said that the proposed projects will play a significant role for country’s human resource development in IT and Agricultural sector and it will help to accelerate the Digital Bangladesh initiative taken by the government. He also said Bangladesh made substantial progress in IT and agricultural sectors and action plans are needed to implement the proposed projects.
