Workshop on Draft Strategic Plan for Higher Education held

A workshop on ‘Draft Strategic Plan for Higher Education: 2017-2030’ was held today (15 October 2017) at CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka. Nurul Islam Nahid MP, Honb’le Minister for Education graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Md Alamgir, Secretary, Technical Education and Madrasa Division, Ministry of Education (MoE) and Yoko Nagashima, Senior Education Specialist, World Bank, addressed the programme as the Special Guests. Md. Sohorab Hossain, Secretary, Secondary and Higher Education Division, MoE, presided over the function. Professor Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh presented keynote paper on the Draft Strategic Plan for higher Education: 2017-2030. Dr Gauranga Chandra Mohanta ndc, Project Director (Additional Secretary) Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) gave the address of welcome.

Professor Dr. Dil Afroza Begum, Member, UGC, Dr. Mohammad Farashuddin, former governor of Bangladesh Bank, and also a member of Expert Groups of Draft Strategic Plan for Higher Education, Vice Chancellors including Professor Dr. Harun-or-Rashid, Vice-Chancellor, National University, Professor Dr. Mijanur Rahman, Vice Chancellor, Jagannath University, Professor Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan, Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh Open University, high-officials from MoE, UGC and World Bank, among others, were present on the occasion.

Addressing the programmme, the Education Minister said “we need a strategic plan shortly that will be informative and goal oriented. The strategic plan will play an overall role in our education sector.” He urged the UGC to prepare the draft strategic plan by incorporating recommendations and suggestion of experts and participants in the workshop.

“We need further expert opinions to make it realistic one” he said adding our main objectives are to equip our young generation with technological skills so that they can develop Bangladesh as a modern country.

He also said that quality education is a big challenge for our country and university teachers have to take responsibilities to create skilled human resources as well as to create quality teachers at all levels for the socio-economic development of Bangladesh.

In his keynote presentation, Professor Yousuf Ali Mollah said ‘we need strategic plan to transform our human resource into human capital and establish knowledge-based economy.  In this regard, mid-term and long term strategies are needed to upgrade and update teaching and research at higher levels, he added.

In his presidential speech, Sohorab Hossain thanked the concerned persons for preparing the draft strategic plan.
