Inaugural ceremony of a workshop on tackling campus extremism
Inaugrual ceremony of a-two day long workshop on making peaceful campus and eradicating risk of campus extremism and violence around the world including Bangladesh was held in a city hotel on 13 November 2017. Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest at the workshop. British High Commissioner in Dhaka Her Highness Ms. Alison Blake was present as Special Guest. The British High Commission and British Council in association with the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh organized the workshop.
Professor Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, UGC, Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain, Member, UGC, Dr. Md. Khaled, Secretary, UGC, Mr. David Ashley, Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka, a number of Vice-Chancellors from Public and Private universities, high officials from Home Office in England, Higher Education Funding Council of England, Senior officials from the UGC and different Ministries, among others, were present at the workshop.
Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman, UGC and Professor Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, UGC among others, delivered the concluding speeches at the closing ceremony on 14 November 2017.
In his speech, the Chairman of UGC said that campus extremism is now a global issue. It is a global challenge and it requires collaborations to address the issue. He said Ministry of Education and UGC jointly took several steps to create awareness to root out extremism and violence activities in the universities around the country. He further said UGC has already introduced a course entitled History of Emergence of Bangladesh in a bid to give real picture of our historic liberation war to our young generation.
The Honouble High Commissioner observed that terrorism from higher educational institutions must be eradicated at all cost. She also noted that the cooperation between the British Institutions and UGC is imperative in this regard.
Professor Yousuf Ali Mollah said we do not want violence and campus extremism in the country. He said UGC is relentlessly working to ensure a smooth running of academic activities in universities. He also highlighted the measures undertaken by UGC to eliminate / minimize violence from our campus.
